“Oh, Caridad Del Cobre, unique spirit, without beginning or end, ever present, ever powerful. I am but a drop in your ocean of life. Let me feel the presence of your power. Let me know more clearly what you are and what I mean to you. Make the consciousness of your spiritual reality penetrate my whole being and occupy all the parts of my soul. May your spiritual power which is in my soul penetrate my body. Infuse me with health, vigor, and vitality, so, that I can become a better temple of the Holy Spirit. Give this body the peace, strength, and life that belong to you by virtue of your being. This I ask of you, oh never present spirit, because I am your child and because of your promise of eternal knowledge. Amen.” The traditional story of this Virgin says that around the year 1620 two Indians and a Black Slave went to the Bay of Nipe near the mining province of Cobre to look for salt. As they were rowing in their canoe, they noticed a strange object among the waves. As they approached , they saw that what had attracted their attention was an image of the Virgin Mary that was floating on a piece of wood. The image was approximately 15 inches long, carved in wood. In one arm the Virgin held the Infant Jesus and on the other a cross of gold. The legend at her feet read: Yo Soy La Virgen de La Caridad (I am the Virgin of Charity). The three men picked up thew image and brought it to Santiago where a small chapel was built in her honor. In 1916 she was declared patron of Cuba. The many miracles of La Caridad are celebrated each year on her feast day of September 8th.
“Holy Child Of Atocha, who shed your blessings on whoever invokes your name, look kindly on me who kneels humbly before your holy Image, and hear my prayers. Give mercy to the many poor and needy people who trust in your divine heart. Lay your all powerful hand upon them and help them in their needs. Lay your hand upon the sick, to cure them and sanctify their suffering. Upon those in distress, to console them. Upon sinners, to draw them into the light of your divine grace. Upon all those who, stricken with grief and suffering, turn trustingly to you for loving help. Grant the treasures of your divine mercy to all the world, and keep us now and always in the grace of your love. Amen.” In the city of Atocha in Spain, a small child appeared at a prison where Christians were held. The child had with him a pail of water and a basket of bread. All the prisoners there were nourished by the bread and water yet the basket and pail remained full. The people were astonished and the word quickly spread through Spain that the Christ child had taken compassion on the prisoners and had come to alleviate their suffering. This is how the belief in the Holy Child of Atocha was born.
“Glorious apostle Saint Jude, you are in Heaven contemplating divine peace, absorbed in a thousand delights that constitute your eternal happiness. You returned the graces of Jesus with constant loyalty, and you loved him with all your heart. Your devotion made you fly to instill in the hearts of the people, the productive seed of truth to protect the despaired. Give me the grace to repent for my sins, to live with your friendship, to imitate your example, and to fulfill my spiritual duties. Amen.” Saint Jude is depicted wearing green because green symbolizes hope and renewal. Just as in spring when foliage and flowers spring up with renewed life, we turn to St. Jude, our Patron of Hope, in difficult or seemingly hopeless times. During the Great Depression and World War II, thousands of men, women, and children attended novenas at the shrine of Saint Jude causing devotion to the “patron saint of hopeless causes” to spread throughout the country.
Pray to saints because they are already in heaven, and they can intercede for you. In moments of anxiety, you need to hope and believe in something that helps you recover faith and maintain peace in your life.
A prayer is said before the candle as it burns. When the candle is first lit this prayer is to ask for what you desire or what help is needed in your life. Lighting a prayer candle as a way to leave the old behind and begin a new life just as if you were born again, the sense being akin to the resurrection and it leaves your sins behind you, giving a new aspect and a new look into your life, without being burdened by your old sins and you old mistakes. Prayer is the master key. Prayer is the key to all earthy problems. Prayer is an art and requires practice. Praying is more than just mere words, it myst come from deep within you, from you very soul. The exercise of prayer requires tranquility and peace of mind. The essence of prayer is faith, it is your motive power that comes from within you and its movement must be directed upwards to where all earthy favors come from. Anyone can make their prayers come true. This is as sure as the rise of tomorrow’s sun. If you knew how you would feel if your prayer were answered, and if you could realize, consciously, just how you could awaken such a feeling in yourself, you will travel a long way toward learning how to make your dreams come true. Imagination is the beginning of creation. You must imagine what you desire and believe it to be true. True prayer can come only from within yourself.
